3+ Handles in curves

Hi Glyphs Forum,
I recently opened IBM Plex Sans in my Glyphs app to analyse the structure of some characters and I stumbled upon a peculiar arrangement of the handles: 56|690x502
As you can see, in the italic O there are more than 2 handles in the curves, so I was asking myself the following questions:

  1. Is this approach in some way more accurate/reliable than the common 2 handles one?
  2. Is this a scripted feature or can I replicate this method with the unscripted app?
  3. I saw curves made with several handles in a presentation from Underware Foundry, Iā€™m wandering if this has something to do with higher order interpolation.

Thanks in advance for your time

These are quadratic TrueType curves. You can turn them into cubic PS outlines with Paths > Other > Convert to Cubic. (Works on many selected glyphs as well.)
