Is it possible to add sound to characters in such a way that the keyboard can be used as an instrument?

I guess you can use Garage Band or Logic Pro or other music programs to map your keyboard to different sounds.
This is not at all in the domain of font-making though. Mapping sounds to your keyboard has nothing to do with typography or Glyphs, because you don’t map glyphs to sounds, you map keys to sounds.
