Always use dark mode please

please add an “always use dark mode” to the preferences/settings; for those of us of the goth persuasion

You can do this through the system wide setting already. There are free helper apps to set individual apps to dark mode.

yes, I have realised that now, so please ignore my request. I am using an Alfred Workflow to toggle dark mode for glyphs. I was just after dark mode for glyphs only, but it’s fine this way

thanks

Just out of curiosity: why not switch the whole system?

Just out of my curiosity: why does Glyphs only have an “Always use Light Mode” option instead of doing it the standard macOS way of having a “Theme” setting with dropdown options [Light | Dark | System]?

(Not really relevant to me, since I always use light mode for everything system-wide, but I’ve wondered why before.)

Good point.

The “always use light mode” options for font and edit views was introduced in Glyphs 2 because there was a massive request for it. Even when you set the system to dark mode, it seems a lot of people want to see their letters still black on white.

The triple option you mention was not widespread when we started the option.

well, I can do that, and will do that using Alfred’s toggle, but I quite like the system switching itself to dark in the evening, so I fancied having the options withing Glyphs

any suggestions/recommendations regarding these apps?

I believe macOS (and any apps using these macOS-internal mechanisms) only offers the opposite: disabling dark mode for certain apps. Having a more general color scheme control in Glyphs (automatic/light/dark) sounds like a good idea to me.

There’s an app that I used for a while called Gray. It’s fairly simple, and gives you a UI for a Terminal command. You can also use that of course. Here’s an article about it:

NightOwl, Dusk and litleDarkr do similar things. All these apps are free.
