Can't add point or use knife tool

Hi there, I’ve just started using the demo (2.6.3) so please excuse if this is a newbie question.

I’ve imported an existing font. To make a new @ symbol, I’ve added a and O as components and want to combine them. I’ve decomposed the components to make them editable, and it appears as I’d expect - with handles etc.

I can use the pen tool to remove points, but not to add them - I just get a detached floating point.

I can’t use the knife tool - it projects the little grey dots where it would cut, but doesn’t perform the action.

Am I in some kind of semi-editable space?

Perhaps you are dealing with TT outlines? Try Paths > Other > Convert to Cubic first.
