You mean that the preview does not open automatically? That should be fixed in the latest beta.

It is saved per file. Close the preview area and then close all tabs. New tabs shoud stay closed from now one.

I tried. The problem still exists.
I am also not happy about it, it was a very persistent user request. Try saving the file after closing the preview and closing the tab. That should store the preference in the file.
Are you using one of the recent cutting edge versions?
This should be fixed in 2.4beta from last week. So you need to enable cutting edge version in preferences.
