Editing Production Fonts

I have a beautiful production font from a reputable foundry in which a couple kerning pairs or lack thereof are driving me nuts. I’m wondering about going in, fixing the issue in Glyphs, and exporting this (very slightly) custom version for my own use. I’m a Glyphs and type design newb, so I know almost nothing about hardcore font production. If I were to take this approach (adjusting kerning on a couple pairs and exporting new version), would I be in danger of messing up a whole bunch of stuff that I don’t even know about?
And yes, I am planning to suggest these changes to the foundry for the benefit of all users, but let’s set that aside for now.
thanks!

There are two problems.

  1. A lot foundries do not permit changing the font.

Yes. That can happen. It is not 100% possible to decompile all data in the font.
