Export font with more family names from the same file

Hei everyone!

I’m working on a font with 3 axes and I would like to export the OTFs with 5 different family names (like “FontName”, “FontName Display”, “FontName Rounded”,…), and each of them with their own styles (Regular, Medium, Bold,…).

Is there a parameter that i’s possible to use to change the family name to instances, without having to manually change it in the font tab every time?

I tried with the parameters “postscriptFullName” “postscriptFontName” and “Typographic Family name” but none of them work. It change the name of the file but in Adobe/Microsoft software it doesn’t work.

Thanks a lot!

Why don’t you make an instance for each static font you want to generate? You can even have all the instance permutations automatically generated by using Rainer’s Instance Cooker script.

Hei thanks for the answer!
I have already created all the instances that I need, I just would like to change the name of the family, so that multiple font families are exported and not just one.
Something like this:

FontName-Regular
Font Name-Medium
FontName-Bold

FontName Display-Regular
FontName Display-Medium
FontName Display-Bold

But why do it that way? Give me the reason.

Have you tried the parameter Localized Family Name? Add this to an instance and it will receive a custom family name.

Or create a Project with your Glyphs file and create all the instances you want.

When you want to put the families into different sub-menus in apps

  • Ignore the ps font name, let Glyphs set it.
  • use localized family name and localized style name, that way you can still keep the normal style name for a variable font export.
