is there an automatic way to generate small caps from the existing set of capitals in Glyphs? Or do I have to duplicate my caps and change the glyph names one by one…?

Duplicate all glyphs. They get a “.001” suffix. Select all duplicates and use Find and Replace to change “.001” to “.sc”.
