Hallo I’m working on a typeface and want to use nut fractions as the default. Pre-made fractions work fine, but typing combinations like 1/4 and activating the feature just shows the elements side by side. This happens with both the normal and alternative fraction features. Would mark-to-mark positioning help? I also checked the Nutso2 feature code, but it seems overkill and outdated. Is there an easier solution now?
There is no GPOS preview in Edit view (except for kern
and curs
features), for a reason. You can try Window > Text Preview or test in an app like InDesign, using the Adobe Fonts folder.
Thanks for the quick reply. the misalignment also happens in InDesign and Font Gauntlet. My current setup goes like this: ‘fraction’ has ‘top’ and ‘bottom’ anchors, denominators have ‘_top’ anchors, numerators have ‘_bottom’ anchors. Again, it works when generating prebuilt fractions ‘threequarters’ etc but not when typing 3/4 and then activating the fraction OT feature in INDD
Have you tried using kerning to achieve this? Set your nut fraction glyph to 0 width and then add negative kerning between all numerators to the fraction glyph (with a value of half the fraction glyph outline width). Add the same value between the fraction glyph and all denominators. This will work in all apps and solely relies on kerning.
That would require setting up your fraction glyphs as marks. Not a good idea.
Better with kerning.
