I am creating a handwritten font. I will probably create more than one glyph for some characters. In doing this, sometimes I have a few alternative paths that might be useful for the alternative glyph, but have not created it yet.
Is there a user area away from the main glyph area or can you disable glyphs from exporting or some way to do this? I do not know what this would be called to search for it.

You can right-click on a glyph and uncheck “Export”.
Naming a glyph with a leading underscore (_) makes it non-exporting by default: _something.

Note that the underscore prefix only makes a newly created glyph non-exporting. Adding an underscore after creating a glyph won’t change its export status, that needs to be done manually.
