I assume Glyphs 4 is backwards compatible with any files saved in Glyphs 3, correct?
I couldn’t find anyone else asking this question.

Glyphs 4 can open Glyphs 3 files. When you save such a file from Glyphs 4, the file is still saved in format version 3, so it can again be opened in Glyphs 3.
Once you use features new in Glyphs 4, those cannot always be saved in a format version 3 file. Then, when saving, Glyphs will ask whether you want to switch to the format version 4 for this file or cancel. When you cancel, you can edit the file to no longer use the Glyphs 4 feature and it will save – without asking – to format version 3.
New files in Glyphs 4 are created using format version 4. This way, all features are available without asking you to switch format version when saving. When do don’t need any of the new features and want to collaborate with someone that is using Glyphs 3, you can change the file format version manually to format version 3 in Font Info → Document.

Will there be software updates for Glyphs 3 for a while or is the focus solely on Glyphs 4 now?
No new features are developed for Glyphs 3 since Glyphs 3 with new features is Glyphs 4.
Glyphs 3 will continue to get updates for system compatibility and similar technical fixed in the near future.
I was wondering about this (or, rather, multiple people asked me this): Will 3.5 be marked as “cutting-edge” forever, or will there still be a public, “stable” 3.5 release?

So to be clear, all of my 12 years’ worth of legacy version 3 files are safe and need no new attention to be used, unless I use one of the new features from version 4?
This is still the very first version of Glyphs 4, so, if you discover an issue with opening a Glyphs 3 file, let us know and we’ll fix it. But there is no need to convert your existing library of font files to make sure they are usable in the future.
Florian, I just purchased the upgrade an hour ago to support the efforts of the Glyphs Team, but will hold off on using it until those “New pont zero” edges are tidied up a bit

I tried to update to 3.5. but it is seems still a cutting edge version? did i miss something?
The release page was visible by accident. We will need a few more days to finish the update.
