Gray text line appearance options

I was wondering if there is anyway to customize the vertical gray line that is used with the text tool?

I like how it is, but sometimes when I’m kerning it can feel slightly disruptive when scanning the negative space appearance between letters.

Perhaps a line that is the same hairline thickness and color, but maybe dotted? (Don’t know if it’d be distracting or a help or not; the default line maybe best as is.)

It’s helpful on those occasions when you may have the sidebearing spacing wrong on one or both of the letters. Finding that, fix it, then worry about any kerning. Learn to ignore the line; it is not that hard to do.

You can put the cursor in front of the left glyph, and kern with Opt+Cmd instead (rather than Ctrl+Opt).
