Illustrator Glyph Panel Types Incorrect Glyphs

So I recently ran into a problem where, when I choose (for ex a ligature) in Illustrator’s Glyphs panel, it types an entirely different glyph (for ex :ffi ligature becomes ããc).

It doesn’t seem to have this problem in InDesign, anybody have any ideas why Illustrator might be doing this? (is there a problem with my otf file?)
