Kerning Groups and Metrics

Hello,

I have a question about metrics and kerning groups. The right of my “3” and “8” both have the same shape and belong to the same kerning group (screenshot attached). The metrics are as follows:

3:
30 units left
25 units right.

8:
25 units left
three (25) inherited units right.

My Question: Is there a metrics formula I can type on the left side of my “8” so that it always matches the right side if “three (25)” were to change? I think this makes sense because both sides of the “8” match the right of the “3.”

=|three

The | means opposite side. You can also do =| in the LSB of the eight. Then it uses the RSB of itself.

Also useful in key glyphs like the “H”: use =| in the RSB.

I tried your suggestion and got this warning…

You put it in the kerning group text box. This are for kerning group names. Put it into the side bearing text box (where the numbers are, left and right directly around the glyph name).

Coffee hasn’t quite kicked in yet. Thank you for that. LOL!
