Moving an intermediate layer to a different master

  • Does it matter which master an intermediate layer is assigned to?
  • If not, why doesn’t Glyphs allow me to move it to a different master (by dragging)?

No
Good question

Thanks!
As a long-term goal one could re-think whether intermediate layers maybe shouldn’t be assigned to any master at all, at least not in terms of UI. I don’t think of them as belonging to any master when I use them.

I had problems with building a variable font via ufo export and fontmake when there were intermediate layers with the same name but assigned to different masters. Assigning them all to the same master via script solved it.

Interesting thread. I was wondering about that without consciously knowing it. +1 for making it more clear to understand in the UI.

Long-term, Intermediate layers inherit the designspace location from their master on those coordinates that are not explicitly set on the layer. That way, adjusting the masters location also adjusts the location the Intermediate layer on those axes where it does not explicitly differ.

Technically not.
I consider them between two masters instead of belonging to one of them (technically they are).
