Having trouble identifying this in the manual. What does it mean when these handles are red? They turn to regular handles (not red) if I move the point a bit left or right.
You have the Show Angled Handles plugin activated. You can either turn it off, or deactivate certain highlighters in the context menu when you right-click in the edit view.
