You can drag select the path with the option key pressed. Then it will only select the oncurve points.

There’s also the plugin “Show Nodes” in the Plugin Manager. I didn’t maintain it since about a couple of years, but it still does its simple job.
The good thing is, that you don’t need to select anything, It’ll tell you the number anytime.
