Seems like the text editor for the OT features has got smart quotes built in. So, when typing a ’ for a contextual substitution then I actually get a ', which obviously causes a compiler error. Copy & paste from a text editor is a workaround but maybe you can deactivate the smart quotes?
As a workaround in the meantime, you can disable System Preferences > Keyboard > Text > Use smart quotes and dashes.
