Spaces and periods when hitting spacebar

Hitting spacebar fast creates alternating spaces and periods.
This is true when the previous character is a-z, A-Z.
Not when the previous character is period or space.
Not when hitting with more than ~half a second interval.

Same result in two different fonts, one created by me, one not.

That is probably a text input feature of MacOS. Try the same in text edit.

You can control this behavior in System Preferences. Go to “Keyboard” → “Text” and unselect “Add period with double-space”.
