Spacing with multipicators (But how do I set it to only measure in between X-height & Baseline?)

Hi there, I saw someone once doing spacing once only with multiplications (for example: =period*0.5 ) and I also believe to remember that there was a possibility to command the spacing I a way, that it only measures inbetween the baseline & x-height. For letters like lowercase β€œj” , it would then not start to measure on the left where the defender is, but on the stem. As a consequence then it would be possible to do negative spacing in this method. Does anyone here know how to do it? Or where I can find the information for it? Ive been looking but seem to not find it.

A tip would be very appreciated :----)
Thank you in advance, Lina

View β†’ Show Measurement Line (in the Text mode) could help to see the distance from sidebearing to the stem.

You can add a measurement line to the metics key: Spacing β€” Glyphs Handbook

But Please overdo the metrics keys calculations. The usually only useful for small adjustments (e.g. when the β€œD” has a slightly different curvature than the β€œO”). A *0.5 is usually not something you would do.

thanks!

thank you for the help! Is there a reason to why not to β€œoverdo them”?

Because the spacing of different shapes (flat to round to diagonal) usually is not related by nice factors.
