The colors of modified glyphs do not darken when saved

Device: MacBook Air M2

macOS: Sonoma 14.8.9

Glyphs 3: version 3.4.1 (3436)

After updating the system, I noticed that when I save a file, the colors of the modified glyphs—which are slightly lighter than the unmodified ones—don’t change and remain light. It’s become difficult to tell which glyphs have been modified when saving the file. I suspect this bug appeared specifically after the system update, since I didn’t notice this behavior before the update. How can I contact the developers to report this bug?

I’ll have a look.

Today I updated Glyphs to version 3.5 (3532), but unfortunately, the problem persists. Edited glyphs remain light in color after saving.

Works for me.
Can you try to start without plugins. Hold down the Option + Shift key when you start Glyphs.

If that still doesn’t work, can you send me the .glyphs file?

I launched Glyphs without any plugins, but nothing changed.

This happens regardless of the file. I tested it on the current file, on previously saved files, and created a new one. So there’s no reason to send you the file.

I also tested it on another macOS Mojave system, and the problem doesn’t occur there. So I still suspect that the update to Sonoma 14.8.9 is to blame.

Of course, I could roll back the system to its stock settings, but I’d rather not have to reconfigure all my programs because of this.

I decided to check whether this issue exists in Glyphs 2 Version 2.6.11 (1365). No, that feature works there.

Then I downloaded and installed Glyphs 4 Version 4.1 (4107) in trial mode. And there I discovered that this feature isn’t there, or at least it doesn’t work for me at all. That is, when I change the color, the glyph doesn’t become lighter, and consequently, it doesn’t become darker after saving the file.

I hope my tests will help you solve the problem in some way.

UPD: I noticed something strange in Glyphs 4. The “About Glyphs” window doesn’t show a close button with a cross, but if you click in the upper-left corner of the window, it closes. Is this a feature or a bug? I was confused for a while, wondering how to close the window )))

Is it possible that you have “Use Version (new saving behavior in Lion)” active in Preferences > User Settings?
I would recommend to disable it as it overwrite files just by opening them.

Yes, you’re right, that setting was enabled. After I disabled it, the problem went away. :+1:

Tell me, why isn’t this feature working for me in Glyphs 4? I couldn’t find that setting there.

The seting is still there at the same place, just got renamed to “Automatically save changes in place …”

I have that setting turned off. But when I change the glyph, its color doesn’t get lighter. (

Of course, it doesn’t matter right now, but in the future, when I upgrade to version 4, I’d like to know that the feature works.

can you show a screenshot of what you see?

In glyph 4, the change state is indicated by a gray dot in the top left corner (e.g. in the E)

Oh, I see it now. I think the indicator is too subtle; it was better with the highlighting, it stood out more. It’s a shame you changed the feature to make it less noticeable.

It was interfering with the selection state and color labels. Three different things that all slightly change the color of the glyph cell.

In that case, could we make the marker a little bigger?

We could enlarge the dot (or use a square) in the corner to the same size as the red triangle that indicates incompatibility between masters.

That way, it would be immediately noticeable.
