The instance is not defined correctly (only from .glyphsproject export)

I am getting the ‘The instance is not defined correctly’ when exporting a font from a .glyphsproject file whilst the font file exports just fine on its own. The problem does not arise from any changes in the project file as it happens even without any edits there. In the side panel showing the instances, only the icon for the Variable instance is displayed with the ‘n’.

Any idea where to look for the problem?
