There was a problem converting the PostScript source font

Hi,

Just working a new font, with many lines and many intersection.
Not finished yet, but I wanted to have a trial export.
Unfortunately encountered several problems during export.

1) OTF export and only “Remove Overlap” checkbox checked on.

The export seemingly is good, but the the overlaps didn’t removed.
I know it incredible. I’ve tested it several times.
I would ask here, can it be any problem if the overlaps are not removed?

2) OTF export, the “Remove Overlap” and “Autohint” checkboxes checked on.

I got the following error:

“There was a problem converting the PostScript source font”
There is no more information, about the problem.

Please help me!

My system:
Glyphs version 2.5.2 (1181)
macOS 10.13.6

This is probably to complex for the Remove Overlap algorithm. Does it remove overlaps properly if you do it with the menu command Filter > Remove Overlap?

Yes. If I do it one by one, the “Remove Overlap” filter is working.
But I have more instance with different line width. Ok, I can do it manually.
In that case, when I tried to export I got the following error:
“There was a problem converting the PostScript source font”
This moment I can export only with overlap. :frowning:

Could you write me, can it be any problem if the overlaps are not removed?
Compatibility or other expected problems?

After I manually removed all overlap. I got this again and again. :frowning:
error

The error message is from the autohinter. But since hints will only mess with your outlines, I would not hint the font at all.

Can you send me the file and I have a look why the remove overlap is not working.

Hi Georg,

I sent it.
Thank you very much for your help.

I had a look at the file.

The error message is actually something else. It is caused by to much postscript code that comes from to many nodes. So you will need to simplify your letters a bit or export as TrueType.

And the remove overlap filter is perfectly fine, you are just not running it in the right moment. The filter that is expanding the paths is run after the remove overlap. So you need to change the “Filter” to “PreFilter”. Then it works.

Thank you.
I changed the “Filter” to “Prefilter”.
Unfortunately I got an Overlap Filter error message.

Something went wrong with the Remove Overlap filter in glyph: I

Unfortunately I can’t export as TTF, because I got the same error message, in another glyphs.
Something went wrong with the Remove Overlap filter in glyph:

Hi there, I’m experiencing the same problem when I try to export a TTF, saying:
There was a problem converting the PostScript source font.

I made a custom font, consisting only of capitals. Actually I doesn’t have too many nodes. But I still can’t export it.

If I try to export the font as a WOFF, I get following windows (see attach):

What shall I do?!

All best

What version of Glyphs do you have? And you are on macOS Catalina, aren’t you?

Hi Georg! Yes I updated a couple of days ago!
My glyphs version: Version 2.6 (1192)

I just found this link and made an update! It works!
Thank you!

With Remove Overlap and Autohint on I get “There was a problem converting the PostScript source font” with the first instance.

Glyphs 2 exports the same file just fine.

Glyphs 3, Big Sur

Can you send me the .glyphs file?

Thanks for the file. I found the problem. Should be fixed soon.

Hello!
I Have the same problem. (Glyphs 3, Big Sur)
It does not occur with every glyph file. Some work fine, some doesn’t.

Hello again!
I think I should be a litte more specific. ; ) Yesterday I was referring to @albertomalossi

The Message “There was a problem converting the PostScript source font” with the first instance only occurs while exporting PostScript-OTF with Autohinting checked.

Remove Overlaps function checked or unchecked does not affect the problem.

Overall my design is very common, but with very narrow counters. Does that cause the problem with the Autohinter? However, the Message does not occur in Glyphs 2.
