Vertical Metrics in InDesign

I’m having an issue that seems to involve vertical metrics in my variable font after making a few edits. The edits included some tweaks to certain glyph designs, adding additional glyphs, and using the Kern On plugin.

After making the edits and exporting to a variable TTF, typing any new character into an InDesign text frame, in a document set in my font, causes the baseline of the text in the frame to shift down by one baseline grid unit.

I’ve tried troubleshooting vertical metrics and related features settings, as well as exporting an OTF instance of one of the variable font masters. The OTF doesn’t have the baseline shift issue, but I can’t figure out how to resolve the issue for the TTF.

Did you read the vertical metrics tutorial?

Hi Georg, I took another look at the tutorial, but haven’t found any solutions there. After looking into it a but further, it seems like the Use Extension Kerning custom parameter might be changing how the GPOS table is being interpreted by InDesign, but that side of things is a bit beyond me.

I think I figured it out—I had to set the custom parameters that defined vertical metrics in each master closer to the metrics of the masters themselves, while still allowing for a bit of extra room to avoid clipping uppercase accented glyphs.
