Visual bug variable typography

Hello !

I am currently working on a variable font in Glyphs 3, with two axes (one for thickness, the other for width). When I export my font to test it in Illustrator, there is a random visual bug, particularly on the letter “M” with a black stroke, as shown in the attached images.

Do you know why this is happening?

Thank you for your help!

Which version of illustrator is this? Make sure you have at least the 2025 version.

Probably a bug in Illustrator though. There are some thing you can do on the font’s side:

  • Double check the path direction.
  • Rearrange the points a tiny bit (e.g. in the overlaps)
  • Reset the start point.

Thank you for your reply.

It was version 2025. I just updated to the latest version and tested it again, but the problem is still there. I also tried the steps you suggested.

What seems strange to me is that I’ve already had the same issue with another one of my fonts, but never with someone else’s font. What’s more, the issue is still there when I vectorize my text.

Anyway, I think it’s just an Illustrator bug because I also tried it on InDesign and the problem isn’t there.

There is a version 2026 already. Maybe try to update?
