I don’t remember noticing this before, but some handles are marked in red (see image). I don’t see anything about this in the manual, and searching “red handles” on the forum returns nothing useful (lots of words contain the letters “red”). What does it mean? They appear even when previewing a glyph (space bar).
Looks like you may have installed Rainer’s ShowAngledHandles plug-in: https://github.com/mekkablue/ShowAngledHandles
Go to the “View -> Show Angled Handles” option and select it to turn it off.

With Command-Y you can turn it off or on.
Yes, and, now that I think of it, I remember hitting command-y by mistake this morning not long before I first noticed the red handles.
