Wondering about the advance width of mediumspace-math

Hi!

So, the auto generated whitespace character mediumspace-math in a 1000upm font clocks in at 4500 units.

The Unicode Standard for general punctuation recommends a width of 4 eighteenths of an em. Which brings me to the question: Is there a reason glyphs does it with 4500 units?
