I vaguely remember that one could make a ad hoc axis for just a selection of glyphs (rather than create a whole new global master), but I can’t find it. Halp!
Try the TypeNurse script “make component smart” (I think there’s a mekkablue one too, by now) You need to select the components, not the glyphs.
Or do you mean smart component axes in general? Then name your glyph _part.myglyphname and you can select “Smart Component Settings”. You can add these axes via a script as well, if you don’t want to rename the glyphs.
I’m don’t know if it has anything to do with smart components. What I’m after is the creation of a full axis in a variable font, but it will only include a subset of all the glyphs of the glyphs file.
Maybe Virtual Master ?
