AI prediction and inspiration for typeface design

Hi, I appreciate the new updates of the app.
also I loved how glyphs app auto predict interpolation of bolder or thinner fonts from a master.

I have an idea if you can develop with the help of Ai and could make Glyphs to be the first type design app with smart AI assistance revolutionizing how designers create fonts.

There are some work that are done repetitively in designing process like making a ‘C’ from an ‘O’ or an ‘m’ from an ‘n’
if there is an AI to do these manipulations and fixes visually based on the designer initial letters.

Moreover, you can make the AI to predict or generate new glyphs that that match the visual language of the typeface designed, from the paths drawn, and from a training set of other fonts to learn how each letter are interpolated from the full font.

Also could be used for inspiration and for suggestions.

Best regards,

There’s already a fairly long thread about exploring AI in Glyphs here: https://forum.glyphsapp.com/t/exploring-the-role-of-ai-in-typeface-design-with-glyphs/

Please don’t. I detest when an object tries to think for me.

@SCarewe I think they mean extrapolation.

Try to create a master font with a weight of 200 and another master font with a weight of 600. Then, when you go to the Export tab in the Font Info window, enter a number of 800 or 100. You’ll notice that the Glyphs app automatically generates a bolder version of the font for you.

That’s basic linear extrapolation of outlines. What does that have to do with AI making guesses about your design intention?

I think monotype and blaze type is doing something like that, you can check their newsletter, though I doubt it’s necessary for latin based script, i also doubt it is that “useful”, and probably it might just exacerbate plagiarism concerns rather than solve any real problem. “make the AI to predict or generate new glyphs that that match the visual language of the typeface designed” could be potentially good for CJK or other complicated scripts that requires hundred thousands glyphs to be completed. But again, how good it can be then? Do the designers need to do more patch works to fix the inconsistency?

Yes it’s not AI. It’s just an introduction to the post, these type of things that help you design more productive.

Will if you can believe AI can generate realistic videos and draw real humans with voices and reactions, then type design is much simpler than that, and should be part of the next era of type design for a better quality.

Honestly, designing typefaces is one of those things that’s actually fun. Most type designers love the drawing phase — it’s the best part of the job so far.

What we don’t love is the boring production work that comes after: spacing, kerning, proofing complex design spaces, technical checks, QA… That’s where we’d love AI to step in and help.

Here’s a good quote that sums it up:

“I want AI to do my laundry and dishes so that I can do art and writing, not for AI to do my art and writing so that I can do my laundry and dishes.”

Typeface design isn’t just about drawing the shape; the spaces between letters and words are just as important as the drawing itself, so “designing” them is very important for a good final result.

Thanks. Now I can disregard this thread.

Well said!, that’s where we want the AI Agent to jump in and do his job. any repetitive tasks that are time consuming..

I think your opinion on AI generated content, type design, what is “realistic” and what is “better quality” is very concerning…
