Best practices for designing geometric symbols?

Hello community,

I’m wondering if any of you have experience with geometric symbols (I’m talking about ●○◯◐◑◒◓◔◕◌◉◆◇❖◈◊▲▶▼◀△▷▽◁▴▸▾◂▵▹▿◃)?

If so, do you know if there are proper guidelines somewhere for those shapes? What should the size and sidebearing be in relation to the other glyphs? How much should the line weight change in relation to the typeface itself? What are the most common use cases of each of those?

It would be great to hear your experiences designing them, or if you can recommend some good resources on this topic. Thanks! <3

Best regards,
Denise

Many of these are covered by the Build Rare Symbols script. I usually orient myself after the cap height and the thinnest spots in the design. All symbols usually get generous sidebearings so they would not need kerning.

Thank you Rainer! Maybe I will need your help with the scripts again at some point
