Close but not touching optical size

I want to make an optical size (close but not touching). Would you have:
Option 1: a separate font (Font-Regular / Font-Regular-Tight). Option 2: a variable font or Option 3: a stylistic set?

Not touching? As in stencil?

If the shape structure is not compatible or it would take an insane amount of effort to keep it compatible, make it a separate file. If it’s sufficiently easy, make it another axis in the same file.

Stylistic set is a bad idea. Users will not find it and you’ll end up answering many sort a e-mails.

Not touching as in very tight spacing.

I think Sebsan means like the 70s-80s style “Close but not touching” (see old copies of U&lc Phototype era).

I would just call it “Display” since it is not practical at small sizes.
