Color font for use in HTML browsers

I need to create a font with color glyphs for use in HTML browsers (if possible on any platform) that contains just a very limited number of characters.

I would prefer if I can use SVG images for the glyphs.

Any proposal which font format I should use? Is there some sample file?

Regarding sample files: I recently made this litte fun project, a variable COLR web font inspired by the New Order color code used on some of their album covers.

Thanks for your input, however in certain situations in the browser when a line break occurs (due to a resizing) the color is kept for the next glyphs that are black again.
This must be due to some issues in the browser.
