Hi there! This may be a silly question, but for a colour font do all layers and diacritics need to fall within the areas between ascender and descender? Or just the top layer? Would I need to just increase the ascender and descender to accomodate (total would be above 1000px) or would I need to scale the design down so it all falls within the 1000px?
Technically there is no such requirement. For layer fonts to work in Illustrator, make sure lowercase d has the same max y.
