Correct abbreviations for variable font instances

Is there a list of correct abbreviations for variable font instances? I have run up against the 32 character limit.

Which 32 character limit in variable fonts?

It’s these warnings from fontspector

FAIL: [instance-too-long]: Variable font instance name 'Playfair Titling SemiCondensed Bold' formed by
space-separated concatenation of font family name (nameID FAMILY_NAME) and instance subfamily nameID Titling
SemiCondensed Bold exceeds 32 characters.

This has been found to cause shaping issues for some accented letters in Microsoft Word on Windows 10 and 11.

Never heard of that one. I would ignore it, and wait for Microsoft fixing the issue. And if you’re concerned about the rendering in Word, just do a test run. Before trying to fix something that is not broken.

I think “some accented letters” refers, among others, to Vietnamese. Try typing some Vietnamese in Word. When those names are too long, it will be displayed with a fallback font.
