Exporting variable inline font doesn't work …

Hi :-))

I am working on an inline font (“Lichte Schrift”) for my Bachelor’s degree.

The problem is that I cannot export it as a Variable Font, which was my original goal. The main project file is quite cluttered and the axes do not match yet, so I won’t bother you with that. Instead, I made a clean copy with just one axis: Inline Closed (0) to Inline Open (30). In the Variable Preview, everything works perfectly, and there are no red markings indicating a guaranteed failure.

I have attached a screenshot of the error messages. If I understand them correctly, is it simply not possible to export this kind of font as a Variable Font?

I am quite new to type design, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Additional Issue: When I export the font, all “a” glyphs are swapped with an alternate “v”. I have checked the Features tab multiple times but cannot find the issue. I even rebuilt that part from scratch once, thinking it would be faster than troubleshooting, but the problem persists.

PLEASEEE IM BEGGING, BEGGING YOUuuU!

I love you

Sorry it took so long.
The problem is the outside overlaps. You have them in the open master, but not in the closed. The outside overlaps can help with the interpolation for static instances but need to be removed before they are exported to variable fonts.
So what you need to do is either add outside overlaps in the closed master, or remove them in the open. I would recommend to remove them as that gives you more control what ends up in the variable.
