it’s already possible to rename kerns in the kerning window, it would be really useful if it were possible to change an individual glyph kern to a group by prepending an @ symbol to the glyph name (same effect as closing a lock icon in the edit view). right now if you try to rename it in the kerning window to a group name with @, it says it’s an invalid glyph name. I realize the mechanism would be a little more complicated than a simple string change as the UI presents, which is maybe why it doesn’t work that way already, but maybe it could be implemented in an efficient way nonetheless?
That new group would only have one member. So you would need to assign more glyph to it.
So clicking the pair in the kerning panel and then the lock in the info box doesn’t seem to be too complicated. And if you have to do it a lot, you can use the “Compress Kerning” from the action menu in the Kerning panel.
Ok, new request
What about a way to make a given kerning pair appear in the edit view, from the kerning window? An arrow to click on or something like that? Modifier key? That way I’d have easier access to the locks
I understand why it’s unusual for a single glyph to have a group, but these distinctions matter for how I build elaborate kerning pair / sample word lists on a group-to-group basis, and sometimes before all that when defining groups l like to start with a group (assuming I’ll find other uses) before deciding it’s actually a single glyph not in a group. So there are reasons to want to improve this workflow. If none of my suggestions are viable I can probably just script it
That should already work this way. If you have an Edit tab open in Text mode, then you just need to select a pair.
Oh perfect! I had a bunch of windows and tabs open and didn’t even notice it was behaving that way when I tried thanks rainer!
Edit: wait, I think I see why I didn’t notice before - when searching for a glyph or group, say “underscore”, the group won’t appear in the edit view as long as there is text in the search bar
The Edit view is only updated when you manually change the selection in the kerning list. So if you filter, the newly selected pair is not added to the edit view. And if there is only one pair left, you need to unselect it (click below) and then select it again.
