Generate masters from instances when exporting VF

Sometimes, with fonts that have multiple weights, only the thinnest and boldest masters are designed, without designing a Regular weight.

But to avoid issues and complaints from FontBakery, we need to generate a Regular master and set it as the origin.

Could it be possible to add a custom parameter for variable instances to generate some instances as masters at export?

You don’t need a Regular master. The error message is a bit misleading.

Ok, good to know !
But I think it’s also because, even if we didn’t design the Regular, we still want to set it as the origin

@HugoJ hey hugo, which fontbakery profiles did you ran? I had a similar setup with 2 master at both weights extreme. But not getting any complaint in regard of “Regular” not being the VF origin.

fyi, I ran the TypeNetwork, and Universal profiles on fontbakery web.

Thanks!.

Is that currently the correct approach? As I remember, Adobe adds the origin before all instances (unless it’s the same as the first instance), so you get 2 Regulars

Why? There is no reason to do this except for incensing the files quite a bit.

We use check-universal with command line

To be honest, I don’t really know, but I guess it’s to keep the weight origin as consistent as possible across our entire typeface catalogue

Mmh, I just checked, and it seems that this has been fixed by Adobe :person_shrugging:
