I tested a font with a gradient glyph following two pieces of information:

  1. “The SVG color fonts in this chapter contain SVG images for their glyphs but are still OpenType fonts” (page 210 sidebar of the Glyphs 3 Handbook).
  2. “Export color layers with path attributes to SVG by adding the ‘Color Layers to SVG’ custom parameter in File > Font Info… > Exports” page 213 of the Glyphs 3 Handbook).

I tested it in Adobe InDesign and Microsoft Word. In both programs, I have color but no gradient. The color is the darkest shade of the gradient. All other characters, set without color, render properly.

Do I need to change something in my font, or is it a problem with the applications? How is the word “Scalable”, rendered with gradients on page 210, set in the authoring software. Is it a font?

Can you check what color tables are in the font? It might be that you also have a COLR table and that is shown when you test the app.

If you can’t figure out, you can send me the .glyphs and the .otf file.
