We figured it out. FontCreator recently added support for .glyphs files but had the wrong file type. I wrote them and hopefully they fix it soon.

Thank you Georg for reporting this to us. We have just released a FontCreator update that fixes the incorrect file type registration for .glyphs files.
After installing the latest FontCreator update, Glyphs files should open normally in Glyphs again, so removing FontCreator should no longer be needed.
