High CPU usage (86%) while working in Glyphs — webcam lag during video calls

Hi,

I’m seeing abnormally high CPU usage from Glyphs — consistently hitting 86% while actively working in it.

Setup:

• MacBook Pro 14" M1 Pro, 32GB RAM

• macOS Golden Gate Version 27.0 Beta (26A5416b)

• Glyphs 3.4.1

• Multiple font files open, several plugins installed

The issue becomes very noticeable during video calls, where the webcam starts lagging badly due to CPU being maxed out.

Is this normal? Could a plugin be responsible? Any way to diagnose which process inside Glyphs is causing this?

Thanks!

Maybe this is related to the beta OS; those tend to be much slower in certain use cases. Otherwise, a plug-in could be causing the issue, again maybe related to the beta OS.

Try launching Glyphs without plug-ins by holding down the Option and Shift key as Glyphs launches. Does that change the performance noticeably?

Can you try to start without plugins. Hold down the Option + Shift key when you start Glyphs.

Yes! MUCH faster without the plugins :frowning:

How do I identify which specific plugin is causing the issue? can I re-enable them one by one?

You can go to the Plugins folder (ScriptOpen Scripts Folder, the Plugins folder is next to it), move half of the plug-ins to a temporary location like the Desktop. Relaunch Glyphs. If it is still slow, move half of the remaining plug-ins out, relaunch Glyphs, and so on until it is fast.

Then, move the plug-ins from the temporary location back into the Plugins folder, restart Glyphs, repeat until the slowdown becomes noticeable. Then you know the cause.
