In font design, are single-storey g's becoming more and more common?

Does the double-layer g have a kind of old-style printing feel?

Difficult to judge in general, but at least according to what I’ve seen, the double-story g has made a big comeback in the last few years, especially with a flat and less rounded loop design.

Years ago, this was more an issue of country of origin. German-speaking countries tended towards single story and English speakers towards double story. In the early 2000s, most people jumped on the 2 story bandwagon. In more recent years, I think it has become just a preference that designers choose as fits the nature of the particular typeface they are working on. Some designers are more cautious than others and fear bucking any perceived trend. Others are more fearless and may even prefer to set trends. If you are doing a revival, perhaps that style is set historically. Otherwise, any door is open. All you need do is do it well
