Issue with integrating/using more than one style of a font in Adobe InDesign

Hello there,

I’m pretty happy to be able to ask this question — and I am new, so please let me know if there has been opened up any trouble shooting for this issue. Thanks so much in advance for your insight! It is amazing that this community and forum exists

The issue:
When I export my font with two styles (reg and black) InDesign doesn’t show the two options (pic1). Also sometimes it shows not the reg but the black style, which is really odd, since there doesn’t seem to be a logic to the choice.
Uploaded some pics from my settings in GlyphsApp [this side might not be there after resolving this issue].

I tried:
a) clearing out the cache of InDesign
b) tried different export settings (ttf, otf)
c) cleared out all my addable parameters from the export menu in glyphs.app

I’ve had some discussions about it with colleagues and will be attending a workshop on font design next week. But I guess, since up until now we didn’t find an answer, it might be best, to ask this question here asap.

FYI: I did have some hopefully adequate parameters installed (pic attached). I was aiming for parameters that help making working with EFI easier in Microsoft Office applications, because it should be used by teachers etc. So I worked through RE Scheichelbauers “Naming” Tutorial (thanks so much) and got some ideas there.
I wondered whether my parameter choices might have mixed up the settings for InDesign since they were considering Microsoft over Adobe compability …?
BTW in Word it doesn’t work either …

So — very hopeful for some answers and trouble shooting — wishing you a good start in the week, Emka

Remove the “Font Name” entry under “Schrift – Allgemein”.

(The parameter causes the PostScript name of both exports to be identical, so the apps cannot tell both fonts apart)

Ok thanks! I’ve tried that, but it still won’t work. Now there is just “black” in the List, no regular still. Or should I clean out the cache again? :face_with_monocle:

when you test fonts in Adobe apps, please use this: Testing your fonts in Adobe apps | Glyphs

And what do you mean by “past parameter settings in glyphs:”

I have the same problem. In older versions of my font, I could test all font styles in InDesign. Now, only one random font style is displayed. I’ve tried everything and have been searching for a solution for three days. All caches have been cleared, I tryed other font names, InDesign has been reinstalled, etc. Where is the problem?

Hey! Thanks @Georg Seifert — I’ll try that next and report back asap  I might need a few days before being able to.

“past paremeter settings” is the list pf individual parameters a had installed before … in the process of finding the problem here I’ve deleted them all together.

For finding naming conflicts, you could drop both (or more) fonts in this website: https://www.fontdev.app

Then, when you click on the “name” table row, you can see if there are any name table entries that are identical in the fonts. Especially the combinations of FAMILY_NAME and SUBFAMILY_NAME should be unique, and each FULL_NAME, POSTSCRIPT_NAME, and TYPOGRAPHIC_SUBFAMILY_NAME should be unique per family.

Look for the names starting with “3/1/1033/…”, those are the relevant ones.

(The red background does not mean that the entry is wrong, it just means it’s different from the first font)

That seems to be the problem. However, I can’t manage to change the Subfamily Name.

Remove the Full Names parameter.

Removing the Full Names doesn’t help.

This is as it should be.

That’s correct.

There’s a typo, though: Heavy, not Havy.

Thank you so much! It works now

so what I did in total (for the record) and what was the solution in the end:

  1. clearing the InDesign cashe
  2. trying different exports (otf, ttf)
  3. clearing out the individual parameters for masters (“export”)
  4. trying to remove the “Font Name”-Parameter (Font-Reiter), didn’t work (at first)
  5. implementing my own Font-folder in InDesign (Font-Folder-instructions for that) — much recommended!
  6. trying to find irregularities on https://www.fontdev.app
  7. eventually deleted the “Font Name” Parameter again (like mentioned twice now in this issue) and it did work!

I don’t know, why it didn’t work the first time though :face_with_monocle:
Wonderful! Thanks again

(ps. I will now delete the pics from my website, so the link above doesn’t work anymore.)
