Kerning Not Working Across Multiple Fonts in Glyphs

Hello everyone,

I’m experiencing a frustrating issue with kerning in Glyphs that I haven’t been able to resolve. The kerning adjustments I apply in my fonts are not taking effect, either in Glyphs’ preview or after exporting the font and testing it in other design applications like Adobe Illustrator or InDesign.

Here’s a summary of what I’ve tried:

  1. Kerning Code: I’ve applied kerning rules such as pos @Uppercase @Lowercase -80; and specific pair adjustments like pos A h -90;. These are correctly written and should work, but they aren’t affecting the spacing.
  2. Different Fonts: I’ve tested this across several different fonts, both in the current project and by creating new projects. The kerning rules don’t seem to apply in any case.
  3. Cache Clearing: I cleared the font cache on my system and restarted Glyphs, but the issue persists.
  4. Recompiling Features: I’ve tried recompiling features and even reinstalling Glyphs to see if that would solve the problem, but it didn’t help.
  5. Testing in Other Software: After exporting the fonts, I tested them in other design software, but the kerning adjustments still don’t apply.
  6. System and Software: I’m using the latest version of Glyphs on Mac, and everything else seems to work fine except for this kerning issue.

Manual positional feature code is not previewed in the edit view. For simple pair positioning, use the build in kerning feathers.

In order to verify what Georg has already pointed out as a possibility, I suggest testing your fonts in a web application such as fontgauntlet.com. As a general rule, testing font by installing them to your system is a bad idea as long as you can avoid it.
