Can it be that the shortcut for selecting master is wrong? When I use it, it seems to be the shortcut for switching tabs, while Shift+Command+x selects the masters. (Using Version 2.6.2 (1246))

You are right. Cmd+Opt+1… is switching Tabs. Switching masters is just Cmd+1…
