Linked layer sidebearings

Hey all, so I have a bit of a case that I am trying to navigate. Basically I have a glyph, A, and another glyph called A.cv01 which is an alternate. Now the sidebearings of both A and A.cv01 are identical and so in A.cv01 I set the bearings to =A which works.

Now the issue happens when in A.cv01 I have a second layer that needs custom sidebearings that are not the same as the =A but if I set them in the layer then it causes the main layer to be out of sync.

Is there a way to resolve this?

You can use layer metrics keys. Those have two equal signs (e.g. “==B”)
