It seems MergeGlyphs could be smarter about the left sidebearing value and its effect on path/component/guide coordinates.
In the example below, all differences in guidelines and paths relate to the 1 unit difference of the LSB. Sure, if I merge the LSB from one to the other all other differences disappear, but I believe only the LSB line should be shown to make the process visually simpler.
