How can I merge simillar objects to make shape ordering easier?

I want to create variable font with masked chess desk and now I have 100+ rows in shape order. I want to merge squares from chess deck to make shape order easier (with 3 rows(external contour, internal contour and chess deck))
I don’t think that there is a way that merging will help.
You might be able to write a script to sort them.
Are you sure you will manage to get the same number and shapes of squares over all masters.
