I’m planning to offer a font for sale, and I want to have a trial version of the font. What precautions can I take to ensure nobody uses the trial version for their work without purchasing it?

Nothing really. Even if you don’t offer trials, any more or less popular font is easy to pirate, which is why more and more foundries don’t even bother limiting the trial versions anymore.
For any serious commercial use, the user risks getting into legal trouble for using the font without permissions if you catch them, so it’s easier for them to buy it — that’s basically what makes type design possible [in my view]. Beyond that, there will always be tons of illegal use on a smaller scale or in jurisdictions where legal enforcing would be hard.
