On a typeface with touching serifs, should they slightly overlap or just touch each other?

Hi!
I’m working on a display typeface where the serifs tend to create a continuous line. In the current version the serifs are just touching each other. I was wondering, is it the correct method or should the serifs slightly overlap?

Thanks to anyone who might be able to help me!

You’ll have artifacts one way or another. But probably better if you let them overlap 5 units.

Thank you! I assume the fastest way to do it would be to use Transform Metrics on all glyphs, reduce both sidebearings of two units and make adjustments where necessary.

Depends. Do you want to keep the spacing as-is and just extend the serifs to protrude over the side bearings?

I would either recommend a cap component or writing a small script that takes all nodes currently at x = side bearings and moves them either left or right by 5 units.
