Partial turn off intermediate multiple master?

Hi everybody,

as I’m working with two masters (thin and bold), I’m struggling with the interpolation of the “a”. This could be easly fixed with a third master, but that would mean a lot of unrequired work regarding the other characters. So I’m wondering if there’s any way to deactivate the third master in between at characters, where a third step is not required?

Take a look at this tutorial on using a brace layer as an additional intermediate master for a glyph:
